looking forward to sunday

Filed under: Sports — jimlbest @ 11:06 pm

I am always glad for the change in my weekly rhythm when the weekend comes. I am especially looking forward to Sunday and Syndie and I’s excursion to the Palace to see the Pistons play the Cleveland Cavalier’s. Mom and Dad Kivell are coming over to take of the kids while we go to the game. Then all next week the kids are out of school for mid-winter break. Emily and Samantha will be going to Canada to spend the week with Gram and Papa. So I am planning some special things for JJ and I while the girls are away.

sami is still sick…

Filed under: family, personal — jimlbest @ 8:42 pm

My little Samantha is still sick and had to stay home from school again today. She has some sort of bug that is causing her to run a high fever and feel cruddy. Because she was sick I did not go in and volunteer in her class which made for two weeks in a row. Last week I did not go because the teacher was sick.

Tonight was also supposed to be my last volunteer training class at Angela Hospice but I will have to do some make up class or something. Taking care of sam is the right thing at this point. I am slated to go and fill the bird feeders again on Friday when I get off work. I am glad I can do something small that will bring a little pleasure to a patient with the short amount of time they have left.

Well I have to go and re-tuck some kids into bed.

striking out today….

Filed under: personal — jimlbest @ 3:41 pm

Unbeknown to me! Today is President’s Day. So several things I wanted to do today were closed. How does one such as myself not know that it is a holiday? Well, I had to go to work, my kids had school, and the garbage man came. On the other hand, no mail service, and the city recycling depot was closed, and probably the bank was too if I had attempted to go there. So congratulations to anyone lucky enough to have today off while the rest of us worked.

This weeks movie viewing

Filed under: Film — jimlbest @ 10:15 am
Thursday night I took the kids to the dollar theater in our neighborhood to watch the Disney movie, Chicken Little. The kids like the movie a lot, and it is also a special treat to go to a theater. The price is right when all seats are .99. The movie had the great Disney animation that you would  expect but it actually had an underlying story that an adult could relate too without the kids thinking they were watching something grown up. The plot in Chicken little had emphasis on relating toand finding support and approval from your Father. Which is something I have done a fair bit of thinking about the last five years or so.

Saturday Syndie and I watched Spanglish. It was a decent movie. It is always interesting to see someone like Adam Sandler play a somewhat serious role. It was a good movie to show how communication can breakdown or be misunderstood. Movies like this also help me see the importance and nobility of fighting to have a good family and marriage. It is always a fight because it will not happen without great effort but the effort is very worthwhile.

finally some good news

Filed under: family — jimlbest @ 10:04 am

It seems like there has been lots of bad or disappointing news around our house lately so it is nice to have some good news to celebrate.
  1. Our friend Doug received and accepted a new job offer at U of M.
  2. Syndie got invited to attend the Piston’s game at the Palace on Tuesday.
  3. My Grandma Perkins is doing remarkably well and even walked into the Dr’s office this last week under her own power for the first time in a while since she has been sick.
  4. I was able to find a cheap ticket on Priceline to fly my friend Rob out for a visit in March.

I have an awesome family whom I love and I am so glad to be where I am in life with the good news and the bad news.

update on syndie

Filed under: family — jimlbest @ 8:35 pm

I was able to speak with Syndie this afternoon. I found out that is was a 18 Wheeler that hit her not a pick up truck. Syndie was putting away her border crossing ID when the truck hit the back of our van and knocked her into the middle of the intersection. Thankfully there was no traffic coming through the intersection or she would have been t-boned. She was a bit shaken up about the whole thing. So I am very glad that things turned out as well as they did because it could been a lot worse.

Please Pray!!!

Filed under: personal — jimlbest @ 9:52 am

Syndie just called me from Windsor where she is on her way to Chatham to attend two furnerals. On her way through Windsor she was hit from behind by a truck while she was stopped at a red light. She said she was ok, but I could tell she was very distressed and upset. It is always yucky to have to be at furnerals but being in a car accident on the way does not help either. We just got our van back a week a go from an accident in January and this will be a pain in the butt because it is an american car and the accident occured in Canada. I really hate being so far away with not much I can do but wait. I small miracle to report already! When Syndie called me I was in a location that I normally do not have a cell signal but I got her call anyway. I write more when I know more.

Economic Hard Times In Metro Detroit

Filed under: Uncategorized — jimlbest @ 4:12 pm

Anybody who lives in Michigan right now knows that the sate of the economy is a big deal. The auto industry continues to slump and it has a direct correlation on everything in S.E. Michigan and pretty much the whole state for that matter. So far it has not hit too close to hoome for me. But that has changed. Yesterday my place employee made it’s first staff reduction because of the current fiscal woes. Things will be very differnt from now on. At this point I am thankful to still have a job and be able to do a work that I am good at and really like. I have a real good temperament to navigate change and transition some of my co-workers are not as well endowed. My plan is to continue to put into practice something I have read several times in the book of Colossians.

 Colossians 3:23 (NLT)
Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than people.
