Tomorrow Syndie and Emily are going by coach bus to COSI in Toledo, OH. It is also a 1/2 of school so I am working a 1/2 day so I can be home to look after JJ and Sam.

I posted some pictures of our weekend party with Syndie’s family in Chatham on Flickr.

Lucky #13

Filed under: family — jimlbest @ 3:23 pm

Today, Syndie and I celebrate 13 wonderful years together. It seems hard to believe that 13 years has already passed. I guess the old saying is true, “Time fly’s, when you are having fun!”. In honor of our anniversary I have complied a list of interesting tidbits about Jim and Syndie.
  • First met at a pajama/cartoon party at Moody.
  • Syndie tutored me in Intro to Music because I got an F+ on first test.
  • We dated for one month before I asked her to marry me.
  • I asked to her to marry me before I had a ring.
  • The engagement was only about 6 months before we married.
  • Her Dad said, “Don’t you want the rest of her?” when I officially asked if I could have her hand in marriage.
  • We were married twice on the same day because of pesky immigration laws.
  • We married in the sight of God in Chatham, Ontario.
  • We were legally married in a hotel in Allen Park, Mi.
  • My mother-in-law showed up for breakfast at our hotel the next morning.

I am excited to grow old with the women of my dreams.

relationship with God

Filed under: lectio divina — jimlbest @ 8:49 pm

I have added a new custom publishing category “lectio divina”.  I will post from time to time on what I am immersing myself in as I seek to connect with God via the Bible. Lectio Divina is Latin for holy reading. I recently read a book by Eugene Peterson entitled, Eat This Book. The book was a look at how we use the Bible correctly and incorrectly. Too often people (myself included) turn to the Bible simply for information to file away in their brain. And with that the attitude the more the better! So I am trying to utilize the lectio divina to help me connect relationally with God and allow the text to really form and change me. The components of lectio divina are lectio (reading), meditatio (meditation), oratio(prayer), and contemplatio (contemplation). I have done each of these components before but not in an integrated fashion together. For the last two weeks or so I have been using John 14  as my test plot. It has been good for me to stay in one spot and let it soak in to my consciousness and really give myself time to see how it will form me and take shape in me daily life. So far the most striking thing about the passage is the word “obedience” and really try to come to grips with what obedience looks from Gods perspective and not ours. Interestingly enough yesterday on the way home from the Doctors office Emily asked me if I knew anything about “apostolic pentacostal”. I said yes, but why did she want to know? She said she has a friend at school that can’t wear makeup, can’t cut her hair, and must wear long skirts. But in spite of all these external elements of religion she has a bad attitude and is not very nice. Which led to a good discussion on God being more concerned about how we love and care for others instead of making our clothes and hair of central importance to God. So for now I think I am going to keep trying to use the lectio divina instead of plowing through chapter after chapter without taking time to let it effect me.

going to canada tomorrow….

Filed under: family — jimlbest @ 8:08 pm

Nice mild day today here in Westland. I hope it will be similar tomorrow. We are heading over to Chatham to spend the day with Syndie’s family. During the spring and summer we try to all get together once a month to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Which is no small feet considering we live in Westland, MI, one in Windsor, ON, one in Waterloo, ON, and two in Chatham, ON. It is always nice to sit and relax and of course eat and celebrate our family events together. JJ always gets a bit shorted for playmates because he is the only boy cousin. If it is not raining we through our small inflatable bounce house for the kids to play with in Grandma’s backyard. One small dielema, the Piston’s play at 3:30 and we will be in hockey country not basketball.

it’s official

Filed under: family — jimlbest @ 5:24 pm

I spent the afternoon with the kids at the Ear Noes and Throat Doctor in Ann Arbor. After close examination the Doc is going to remove the girls tonsils this summer. He told them they would need to eat lots of ice cream post op so the girls were very excited. So now we need to call the Doctors secretary and schedule it.
