personal web launch

For a while I have been experimenting around with some services that let you create your own personal web launch portal every time you use your web browser. The two that I have settled on our iGoogle and Netvibes. I have iGoogle on my home computer and Netvibes on my work terminal. It is nice to have things like clock, calender, to do list, email, rss feeds, and even lava lamp every time I open my browser.

it’s cold

Filed under: personal — jimlbest @ 7:36 pm

This morning my door was frozen shut on my truck! It was well below zero with the wind chill. I had to spend my first hour of work outside spreading salt. I am so glad that I invested in a pair of insulated coveralls a few years back for occasions such as this. The temps increased slightly when the sun came up but not by much. It will be nice to experience some warmer weather starting on the 9th of February when I make a trip to California. I was able to get a steal of a deal on a ticket just before we had to reconstruct the basement. My friend Rob said it’s cold in California but I said it will be warm to me compared to the Mid-west chill!

weekend visits

Filed under: family — jimlbest @ 5:06 pm

This past weekends we had a chance for some nice visits. My mother and father in-law dropped in on Saturday to see how we were doing and on Sunday we reconnected with an old friend Erica Rhue.

Tonight I am looking forward to going on a date with my daughter Emily.

nice surprise

Filed under: personal — jimlbest @ 10:35 pm

Today I had to work 6+ hours to get the OLGC School ready for the big open house tomorrow. When I came home I was surprised and delighted to see that my lovely wife had done the bulk of our tax prep for this years returns. We have used the online edition of Turbo Tax the last four years and it has worked well for us. I am so blessed to have a life helper like my Syndie!

I could here the noise from the jack hammer as I puled into the drive. The work crew is digging out the cement in the basement in order to lay new drain tile. When the drill is on it is quite noisy! It will messy before it gets better!

Moving From Talk to Power

John Perkins

If
we as Christians can see the issues of our day—the poverty, the
racism, war and injustice—and if we can use the skills and resources
that we get from our training at school or on the job, and if we can
really be open to being equipped by the Spirit of God, then we will be
used. We must lie on our beds at night and wrestle with how we can
individually and collectively bring our faith from talk to power, how
we can bring our faith and works to bear on the real issues of human
need.

I believe that right now we are facing a most difficult
time in history. We are discovering that old strategies have failed and
that the new ones, or rediscovered ones, will not let us hold onto our
old lifestyles.

work on the basement begins

Filed under: family — jimlbest @ 9:32 pm

I have been working feverishly to haul most of our belongings out of the basement. Work will probably begin tomorrow by a local contractor to install new perimeter drain tile and a sump pump system. The girls helped me with some of the bigger items. It is a hassle but it will be nice to get this problem permanently fixed.

Work at OLGC with be busy from now till Sunday. Next week is Catholic Schools Week and we have a big open house on Sunday to show everything off. We had hoped to do some of our spiffying up early but that has been curtailed with the snow and salt duties because of the weather.

date night

Filed under: personal — jimlbest @ 9:49 am

Syndie and I decided at the last minute last night to have a "date night". We had dinner and wonderful adult conversation at New Mexico Restaurant. New Mexico is our favorite local Mexican food place. I also introduced Syndie to flan which I have not had since a visit to Honduras when I was 18. Good stuff! Can’t wait till next time!!
